Assam detention centers: The Supreme Court on Wednesday pulled up state of Assam for poor conditions of foreign nationals who are lodged in detention centres in the state for years together and for not taking steps for their deportation so far.

A visibly angry bench of Justices A S oka and N K Singh summoned the Chief Secretary of Assam to explain as to what steps the state government has taken to deport the foreign nationals.
“We want justification why these detentions are continuing without even process of deportation starting?,” Justice Oka asked counsel appearing for state of Assam.
270 FOREIGN NATIONALS LODGED
Bench went on to pull up state government for failing to give justification as to why 270 foreign nationals were lodged in the state and why no steps being taken to deport them back.
Last year the top court had directed Union Government to take immediate steps for deporting 17 declared foreigners detained in transit camps of Assam, considering no pending cases were registered against them.
STATE CLAIMS DETENTION AFTER FOREIGN TRIBUNAL ORDER
Responding to the query from the bench, advocate appearing for state of Assam tells that, “They were detained only after they were declared foreigners by Foreigners Tribunals.”
At this the bench said, “We want justification why these detentions are continuing without even process of deportation starting?”
SUPREME COURT SEEKS STEPS TAKEN FOR DEPORTATION
The top court summoned the Chief Secretary of Assam virtually and passed the order , “Some foreigners languishing for 10 or more years. The affidavit does not give any justification for detaining…steps taken to deport are not set out. This is gross violation of orders of this court. We direct Chief Secretary to remain present through VC and explain the non-compliance on next date of hearing on February 5.”
